At Lice Clinics DFW, we know that the most effective approach to managing head lice involves strong collaboration between schools and families. Parents play the primary role in checking and treating lice at home, while schools can support these efforts through awareness, open communication, and clear policies.

By partnering together, we can reduce the stigma surrounding head lice and ensure students return to class quickly and confidently.

What Schools Can Do to Support Families

Schools can take simple, proactive steps to assist parents and help control lice outbreaks:

Conduct periodic lice screenings—especially at the start of the school year and after long breaks.

Notify parents privately and promptly if lice or nits are detected.

Allow students to finish the school day before beginning treatment at home.

Additionally, schools should provide clear guidance on how to check for and treat head lice. Sending an email or flyer with instructions can make it easier for families to take action.

What Parents Should Know

If you’re contacted by the school, perform a head check at home right away. Use a bright light and inspect the scalp—particularly behind the ears, at the nape of the neck, and on the crown. Look for small, whitish-tan oval eggs (nits) attached to the hair shaft or live lice that crawl but do not jump or fly.

If lice or nits are found, it’s important to begin treatment as soon as possible. Most schools do not require children to be completely nit-free before returning, especially if treatment has started or if a certificate of professional lice removal is provided.

Treatment Options for Head Lice

When it comes to treatment, parents should consider safety, effectiveness, and convenience. Common options include:

Manual combing: This involves using a fine-tooth comb to remove lice and nits. While effective, it requires time, patience, and thoroughness.

Over-the-counter or prescription products: These include shampoos and lotions that may contain pesticide-based ingredients. Effectiveness can vary, especially if lice have developed resistance.

Professional lice treatment: Clinics like ours use advanced, non-chemical methods to eliminate lice and nits in a single session—usually in less than an hour. We also provide a certificate of treatment so children can return to school the same day.

Why School and Parent Collaboration Matters

By working together, schools and families can create a supportive, informed approach to lice management. This reduces anxiety, helps prevent the spread of lice, and ensures that students can return to learning environments quickly and with confidence.

Need Help with Head Lice?

Lice Clinics DFW offers safe, fast, and effective lice treatment across our three Dallas–Fort Worth locations.
Hair loss can happen for many reasons—genetics, stress, illness, or environment. Lice aren’t a main cause of hair loss, but the irritation and scratching they cause can lead to breakage and scalp issues. Recognizing when lice are the problem can help you take the right steps.

The constant itching from lice causes people to scratch their scalp frequently. This can damage hair follicles, leading to hair breakage or loss. In some cases, scratching can cause open sores that become infected, weakening the scalp and making hair fall out even more. Stress from the infestation can also trigger a condition called telogen effluvium, where hair sheds due to emotional or physical stress.

When it comes to head lice season, early detection and swift action are your best defenses. Here are some key steps to help manage and prevent infestations:

Perform Routine Checks: Regularly inspect your child’s hair and scalp for any signs of lice, especially during peak times. Early detection can help stop an infestation from spreading further.

Educate Your Children: Explain what head lice are, how they spread, and why it’s important to avoid close head-to-head contact. Remind them not to share personal items like hats, combs, or hair accessories.

Apply Effective Treatments: If lice are found, treat them promptly with medicated shampoos or other products designed specifically for lice elimination. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully, and repeat the treatment if necessary.

Comb Out Nits: After treatment, use a fine-toothed comb to remove nits from your child’s hair. This process might need to be repeated over several days to ensure complete removal.

Notify the School or Childcare Facility: Inform your child’s school or daycare if lice are detected so that they can take measures to prevent further spread.

Diagnosing and Treating Head Lice

Lice Clinics DFW offers two groundbreaking treatment options to tackle head lice effectively:

Our Cold and Hot Air Technology: Our devices eliminate both live lice and their eggs (nits) through a process of either dehydration or freezing. By using a precise combination of temperature, airflow and time, we achieve high efficiency—particularly against the resilient lice eggs. Follow-up treatments are rarely needed.

Our Lice Remover Kit: This kit provides a safe, non-toxic, and pesticide-free Rinse that effectively treats head lice and super lice right at home.

Lice Season FAQs

Does lice go away in the winter?
Head lice infestations are typically less common during the winter months. Although lice can survive in colder temperatures, several factors during winter contribute to their reduced prevalence.

Is lice more common in winter or summer?
Infestations tend to peak during the warmer months, especially in late summer and early fall. This increase is largely due to school sessions resuming, greater social interaction, and more humid conditions—factors that facilitate the spread of lice—making them less common during winter.

Can lice be seasonal?
Yes, head lice infestations often follow seasonal patterns. While lice can appear at any time of the year, they are generally more prevalent during periods when children are in close contact, such as the start of the school year, late summer, and early fall.

What kills head lice instantly?
Our Lice treatment devices offer an immediate solution by killing live lice and their eggs through dehydration or freezing. Its innovative approach, which relies on a specific combination of temperature, airflow, time, and technique, makes it exceptionally effective against lice and their eggs (Nits).

By staying vigilant and following these prevention and treatment strategies, you can help protect your child and community from the discomfort and disruption of head lice infestations.

lice are quick to adapt to changes in their environment. That’s why head lice are studied by evolutionary parasitologists.Insecticides were introduced in the 20th century as an alternative way of treating lice. Data from over-the-counter pesticide solutions in the 1980s showed high efficacy in killing head lice.

The parasitologists can observe the lice evolving over multiple generations in just a few months.

Head lice are no exception. Around the turn of the 21st century, there began to be reports that head lice were developing resistance to Lice Shampoos and similar products containing pesticides.

Since then, many studies have further documented that these “super lice” have evolved resistance to certain pesticides, and that many pesticide-based lice products are no longer achieving the high efficacy rates they once did.

Lice resistance should not be an issue for lice treatments using lice combs or dehydration (desiccation or freezing). It is highly improbable that lice will be able to evolve resistance to Cool or hot air treatments devices (which kills head lice through freezing or dehydration) because the mutations involved in resistance to pesticides would not protect lice from desiccation or freezing. Evolving “resistance” to desiccation would be akin to evolving the ability to go without water.
