Yikes! Even just talking about lice facts makes us itch and scratch, right?

We hope you never need to deal with this but if you do, you may want to know more about these pesky creatures and the many myths and misinformation about them. This are 10 things you need to know:

  • Lice don’t jump or fly.
  • They don’t survive long away from the host’ s head (they live up to 48 hrs or less).
  • People with very short hair do get lice!
  • Eggs survive when you color or dye your hair.
  • African Americans do get lice (though less often than other races).
  • About 50% of the population itch when they have lice. This is due to an allergic reaction to the saliva or the bite of lice.
  • A pregnant louse can lay more than 100 eggs during her life cycle.
  • Lice don’t transmit any illness or disease.
  • It takes just seconds (about 30) for lice to transfer from head to head.
  • Most of the time lice are transmitted by head to head contact, although there’s the possibility of getting them when sharing brushes, hats or clothes.
